The History of Shop Sauce
Shop Sauce is a secret family recipe that has been perfected over 25 years by Keith Smith of the Pete Smith Automotive Group. Smith’s father founded the Pete Smith Garage in 1947, near Louisburg, North Carolina. The early business (pictured in this photo) used a tree limb to hoist cars up for repairs. Since then, the Smith family automotive business has grown into its own group of garages and repair shops, offering a complete slate of services and a comprehensive selection of tires.
When they aren’t working with cars, the Smith family loves to grill. Basing his sauce on an old family recipe, Keith Smith started tinkering with his homemade barbecue sauce recipe 25 years ago. With each batch he made, he poured a little bit of the original sauce into the next version of the recipe. After receiving rave reviews on the homemade recipe over the years, the Smith family decided to bottle their sauce and make it available at their automotive service business. Now the sauce is being made available at other locations, and they are very excited to continue sharing their love of food and fellowship with more people. They suggest applying Shop Sauce liberally to pork and chicken in multiple coats, allowing the sauce to caramelize.
But Shop Sauce is more than just a barbecue sauce. With its secretly perfected blend of spices, it has a tangy, savory flavor and can be used on all types of food as a marinade, as a dipping sauce, and as an ingredient in other recipes. In addition to traditional barbecue grilling recipes, the Smith family recommends using their sauce to make deviled eggs, guacamole, and salsa.
